this is a picture of a 6-year-old kid(’s hands) drawing me, wearing a jet pack, with my reallyreallybig camera. i’m flying into outer space, people. astounding!
the photo exists because our emily carr design collective was invited to have two representatives spend time with “young designers” at an elementary school in vancouver. as part of our major project to design an interactive object for children, our design collective needed to gain real experience with kids. during our visit, me and the other rep from our collective spent time drawing, playing, and interacting with the first graders. in retrospect, it was an amazing experience. when i was in high school, i participated in the outreach programs that taught grade-schoolers art during after-school care time, but it wasn’t nearly as fun or enlightening as this young designer visit. these kids were genuinely engaged in meeting with us, playing with us, and interacting like peers.
the reason i won’t release publicly any photos of our group’s “young designers” is because i respect the privacy of the children and their families that are involved with this project. though i did snap some particularly lovely shots of our wonderful designer kids, i don’t feel comfortable sharing them publicly on the internet. i did, however, want to make a post about the experience because i feel as though it was invaluable- having been given the opportunity to hang out with little kids and watch their minds grow and blossom is something that i’ll always remember and appreciate.
